Adverse Weather

Winston-Salem State University will operate under Condition 2 (Suspended Operations) until 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017. Beginning at 10 a.m., the university will begin operating under Condition 1 (Reduced Operations). Offices will be open, although some areas may have reduced staffing.

Staff will continue to follow Condition 2: Suspended Operations through 9:59 a.m.

• The University will remain open only for critical services through this time.

• Employees designated or temporarily assigned as mandatory should report to
  work as directed.

• All other employees DO NOT report to work until 10 a.m.

• Non-mandatory employees in leave generating positions MUST use vacation, bonus,
  compensatory or adverse weather leave/adverse weather dock. Visit
  www.wssu.edu/closings for more information.

  Beginning at 10 a.m., university offices will open and staff will follow Condition 1: Reduced  
  Operations.

• Mandatory employees must report to or remain at work unless otherwise notified.

• Non-mandatory staff should use their discretion in determining their safety to report to, leave
  early from, arrive late to, or not report to work, with timely notice to their supervisor.

• Non-mandatory employees in leave generating positions who do not work a full schedule must
  use vacation, bonus, compensatory or leave without pay. Visit www.wssu.edu/closings for more

We ask all employees and students to please use their best judgment and err on the side of caution when making travel decisions.

Parking restrictions for faculty and staff will be lifted throughout the day. Faculty and staff may park in any available NON-RESERVED parking space on campus.


Due to adverse travel conditions, the university will be operating under Condition 2: Suspended Operations ALL DAY on Monday, Jan. 9. Non-mandatory employees DO NOT report to work. Non-mandatory employees in leave generating positions MUST use vacation, bonus, compensatory or adverse weather leave/adverse weather dock. Please continue to monitor university communications channels for updates.

WSSU staff will continue to work to clear roads, parking lots, and sidewalks.

Please remember:

• Exercise caution while traveling on campus and avoid interfering with crews as they
   clear walkways and lots.
• Keep in mind that the clearest path to your destination may not be the most direct path.
• If you are parking a vehicle on campus, please park in areas that have been cleared of snow.
• You are responsible for your own safety; please exercise good judgment and dress
   appropriately for the conditions.

For continuing students:

• You should use your best judgment regarding travel to campus. Returning students can
   postpone their return to campus until tomorrow.

For students who are on campus:

• Kennedy Dining Hall will open at 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and 4-6 p.m. and will serve brunch and dinner.
• If you need assistance, please contact your respective Resident Advisor or Hall Director.
• For assistance from Campus Police, call (336) 750-2900 (non-emergencies) or (336) 750-2911
  (emergencies).

For faculty and staff:

• Please continue to monitor your email and the WSSU website (www.wssu.edu) for updates regarding
   operations.
• Mandatory employees may call 336-750-2900 to request shuttle service to campus. Please call 90
   minutes before you are expected to arrive on campus and 60 minutes before you need to return
   home. Note that the shuttle will travel to the nearest major intersection to your location.

Activities:

Monday's game versus Elizabeth City State has been postponed.


January 8, 2017

Due to adverse travel conditions, the university will be operating under Condition 2: Suspended Operations through noon on Monday, Jan. 9. Non-mandatory employees DO NOT report to work. Non-mandatory employees in leave generating positions MUST use vacation, bonus, compensatory or adverse weather leave/adverse weather dock. The university will resume normal operations beginning at noon on Monday. Please continue to monitor university communications channels for updates.

WSSU staff will continue to work to clear roads, parking lots, and sidewalks.

Please remember:

• Exercise caution while traveling on campus and avoid interfering with crews as
   they clear walkways and lots.
• Keep in mind that the clearest path to your destination may not be the most direct path.

The National Weather Service has placed central and western North Carolina, including all of the Piedmont Triad, under a Winter Storm Warning in effect through Saturday evening. Currently, 4 to 8 inches of snow are predicted to fall from Friday evening to Saturday afternoon.

The university will be operating under Condition 2: Suspended Operations effective 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7 through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017. Non-mandatory employees DO NOT report to work. Non-mandatory employees in leave generating positions MUST use vacation, bonus, compensatory or adverse weather leave/adverse weather dock.

WSSU staff will be working to clear roads, parking lots, and sidewalks throughout the weekend. Please remember:

• Exercise caution while traveling on campus and avoid interfering with crews as they clear walkways
   and lots.
• Keep in mind that the clearest path to your destination may not be the most direct path.
• If you are parking a vehicle on campus, please park in areas that have been cleared of snow.
• You are responsible for your own safety; please exercise good judgment and dress appropriately for

• The Thompson Center and the Donald J. Reaves Student Center will be open on Saturday and Sunday
   beginning at 9 a.m.
• UREC will be open from noon to 5 p.m. each day.
• Kennedy Dining Hall will open at 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and 4-6 p.m. each day and will serve brunch and
   dinner.
• If you need assistance, please contact your respective Resident Advisor or Hall Director.
• For assistance from Campus Police, call (336) 750-2900 (non-emergencies) or (336) 750-2911
  (emergencies).

   work to identify a date to make up the game.
Monday's game versus Elizabeth City State currently will be played as scheduled. We will
   assess weather on Sunday and make a final decision at that time. If the games are rescheduled, they
   will  held on Wednesday, January 11 at 5:30 p.m. for the women and 7:30 p.m. for the men.

January 5, 2017

The National Weather Service has placed the Winston-Salem area under a Winter Storm Watch, which will be in effect from Friday evening through Saturday evening. The university is closely monitoring the weather. As of Thursday afternoon, there have been no changes to the university’s operations. First time freshmen enrolling this semester are expected to move in Friday. Continuing students can expect to move in on Sunday as planned and classes will begin as scheduled on Wednesday, Jan. 11.
