Two WSSU Students Win Scholarships
Two students from Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) recently won scholarships from a contest sponsored by Food Lion and Coca-Cola Zero in conjunction with the recent CIAA Basketball Tournaments in Charlotte.
The contest awarded $35,000 in scholarships to students from CIAA schools. Students were required to submit an essay on why they chose to attend their CIAA schools or what attending a CIAA school meant to their community.
Ayanna Puryear a sophomore at WSSU from Charlotte, was one of the four grand prize winners who were awarded $5,000 each. Puryear's essay was on why she made the decision to attend a CIAA school.
There were also 15 first place winners of a $1,000 scholarship each, including Stephanie Young, is a senior nontraditional student at WSSU from Hickory. Young wrote about why she wanted to attend Winston-Salem State University to discover a new culture so that her future writing would not be limited to one sphere of influence.
In addition to the two students from WSSU, there were also winners from nine other CIAA schools.
