Foundations of Distance Learning Facilitator: Dr. Abbie Brown This session provides an overview of the technologies and theories that shape our current approaches to distance education. The workshop includes an introduction and review of the decision-making processes that faculty use to determine which distance learning technologies are best suited to their course content and learner population. The workshop also includes descriptions and examples of popular distance delivery methods. Upon completing the workshop, participants will have a better understanding of their distance-teaching options and reasons for selecting specific activities and delivery methods. Biography
Facilitator: Dr. Abbie Brown This session provides guidance and idea for the design and organization of an online course. Specific examples from successful courses will be provided. The basics of content organization and class management as they apply to the Blackboard course environment will be presented through specific examples. Upon completing the workshop, participants will have a better understanding of how to design an affective and reliable online course. Biography
Advanced Online Instructional Strategies Facilitator: Dr. Abbie Brown Instructional strategies that promote distributed practice (regular course participation throughout a semester) and collaborative learning will be discussed. Advanced technologies and activities such as embedding video and interactive media into Blackboard course environments will be presented. Issues regarding reliable and consistent delivery of instruction and student integrity and ethics will be discussed. Upon completing the workshop, participants will have a better understanding of how to incorporate instructional strategies and technologies that increase interactivity, participation, security, and learner satisfaction. This session builds upon the Online Course Design Workshop offered on 3/18 from 3:30-5:00 however attendance at the earlier workshop is not a prerequisite. Biography Math and Art: Enhancing The Curriculum through Inter-Disciplinary Teaching and Collaboration Facilitator: John Sims Co-sponsored by The Diggs Gallery. Faculty of diverse academic disciplines will be introduced to the essence of mathematics, how it informs the creative process and re-enforces mathematical and analytical thinking and quantitative literacy into their general education and upper-division courses. The secondary objective of the workshop is to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and discuss specific tools/techniques to facilitate inter-disciplinary teaching and learning. Read More
Faculty/Staff Profile Web Pages: A Hands-On Training Facilitator: Precious McKoy Training Dates (select one): Please join web support services in this quick and easy 75 minute session where participants will learn easy ways to communicate with constituents about pedagogical philosophy, professional experience, research, teaching expertise and much more. Faculty/Staff profiles are managed by Web Support Services within the Cascade Server system. Participants should come to the workshop with a flash drive containing the following documents to upload: one paragraph biographical statement, teaching philosophy, updated curriculum vitae, list of courses and publications, and current photo in JPG format. Qualitative Inquiry: Teaching and Learning Across Disciplines Facilitator: Dr. Margarete Sandelowski This didactic session will focus upon defining attributes, philosophical foundations and sampling and design features distinctive to qualitative inquiry. Participants will be provided the opportunity to compare two methodological approaches commonly used in the practice disciplines: qualitative description and grounded theory. Additionally, the contribution of qualitative inquiry to evidence-based practice and practice-based evidence will be outlined.
Best Practices in Working with Students Experiencing Emotional Distress: Asynchronous Online Training Available online until June 30, 2013 Through a grant from The HBCU Center for Excellence in Behavioral Health, The WSSU Wellness Center has partnered with the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) to provide an online asynchronous training to faculty examining best practices in identifying, approaching and referring students experiencing emotional distress. This innovative training through Kognito, a company specializing in interactive simulations, utilizes avatar-based learning. Faculty members enter a virtual environment, assume the role of a professor and respond to real student situations. This fun and interactive program helps to promote awareness and early intervention, increase student retention and academic performance and reduce stigma associated with mental illness.
