Health care costs are incredibly expensive in the U.S. Therefore, all international students enrolled at WSSU on F or J visa are required to carry approved health insurance.
The University of North Carolina system offers the following health plan by HTH Worldwide as the minimum compulsory insurance coverage for international students enrolled in an UNC institution. This means that any alternative coverage must be superior before a waiver can be considered by the Office of International Programs. The cost of this plan is US$56.50 per month. Payments can be paid in semester and year increments only through the Office of International Programs.

Insurance Cards
Upon Payment of health insurance, the Office of International Programs will enroll you in the insurance plan and an electronic insurance card will be e-mailed to your WSSU account. A complete brochure of plan information will be provided for you. Insurance cards should be carried at all times in the event of emergency or sudden illness.
Using HTH insurance
Should you become ill and need to see a doctor, you should first visit the campus health center if possible. The health center offers many minor services that are free or at minimal costs to students. The health center will provide a referral to local physicians, reducing your physician co-pay costs to $50 instead of $100. For more information office hours and services, please visit the Student Health Center website.
In the event of serious illness or emergency, you should log-on to the HTH website to find a preferred physician or hospital. Using a preferred provider will result in lower charges to your final bill. Emergency room visits are quite costly and should only be used when extremely necessary.
Alternative Health Insurance Plan Approval
In some cases, health insurance plans other than HTH Worldwide are acceptable and a waiver to use this insurance can be requested from the Office of International Programs. However, the alternative insurance must at the very least meet all of the coverage amounts provided by HTH.
