During the summer, Winston-Salem State University Upward Bound students live on campus and are involved in an INTENSIVE academic program with an emphasis on English, mathematics, science, reading, writing, history, SAT Prep and foreign languages. The students begin the program with a battery of tests to determine their strengths and weaknesses. Instruction is individualized in a small classroom environment. Individual and group counseling is also an important element of the program. The Upward Bound residential program runs for six weeks during the summer. Only those students who have been in the program for the entire year are eligible for the summer component. The program pays for room and board expenses including three meals a day. All students have access to the campus library, computer lab, and the C.E. Gaines sports facility.
