Message from the Director of Sponsored Programs
For much of our history, Winston-Salem State University has focused on our traditional HBCU role as a teaching institution serving our community. However, in order to play an increased role in serving society and participate more significantly in the nation's priorities, we must offer a different face to our stakeholders and our community. We must use our existing research capabilities and enhance our developing capabilities and resources through strategic partnerships and alliances.
In addressing the increasing complexity and significance of society's problems, needs, and issues, these strategic partnerships and alliances involving community organizations, business and industry, government, and universities have a high potential to create new and innovative ideas that will help the North Carolina economy move from a dependence on tobacco, textiles, and furniture to a new emphasis on biotechnology, logistics, and design. WSSU's participation in these and other collaborations fulfills our economic development role as mandated by House Bill 1264.
These collaborations will be supported by research and other sponsored program activity in the six niche areas we have identified via a combination of faculty input and a review of local, regional, state, and national priorities:
- Community Safety, Defense, and Homeland Security
- Health Promotion, Biomedical Sciences, and Minority Health Disparities
- Computational, Physical, Informational, and Mathematical Sciences and Technology
- Entrepreneurship and Economic Development
WSSU is committed to serving society.
