
Elementary Math Invitational
On Saturday, April 20, 2013, the Winston-Salem State University Elementary Mathematics Invitational will be held, which consists of a math contest for 4th and 5th graders and Math Activities for their parents. There seems to be an interest demonstrated by math teachers in the surrounding area to have their students participate at our site, and we definitely would like for students from your school or group to participate. We have been working very hard to provide contestants and parents with a rewarding experience and hope that you are as excited as we are about the contest. Details concerning the date, place, schedule, eligibility, awards, and the tests are described below.

PURPOSE
- To stimulate interest in mathematics.
- To provide recognition for outstanding elementary mathematics students and outstanding mathematics teachers.
- To create dialogue between parents and Winston-Salem State University.
- To share mathematics activities with parents that can be done at home with their children.
GENERAL INFORMATION
I. ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible to participate in the WSSU EMI, a student must be in the 4th or 5th grade or taking mathematics classes on the 4th or 5th grade level. Each contestant will compete individually for awards. If there is doubt about the eligibility of a student, the sponsoring adult should consult the site contest chair as early as possible.
II. AWARDS
Trophies will be presented to the top three (3) scoring individuals for the contest. All participants will receive certificates for participating.
III. TESTS
The Winston-Salem State University Elementary Mathematics Invitational will feature a test with 4th and 5th grade mathematics material. The test will be a multiple choice test of 30 questions with a time limit of 85 minutes. In the event of ties, a tie breaking process will be utilized based upon several previously chosen tie breaker items. For the contest, there is a calculator active part and a calculator inactive part.
IV. FEES
A fee of $10 will be charged for each contestant and adult attending the Elementary Mathematics Invitational. The fee will help cover the costs of breakfast, printing expenses, materials and awards for the winners. All checks and money orders will be made payable to WSSU Foundation. In the memo line, please write “WSSU CMSTE EMI.”
V. CALCULATORS
The WSSU Elementary Mathematics Invitational will allow scientific calculator use on the Calculator Active portion of the test, which is 70% of the test. Students must bring their own scientific calculators. Students must bring their own number 2 pencils.
VI. REGISTRATION
It is requested that you fill out and return to me the enclosed Contest Registration Form on or before April 16, 2013. Please register on time to make sure you are included in our contest; furthermore, due to facility capacity, we may have to limit contest participation. Therefore, it is important to send your registration form on time. Acknowledgement of receipt will be sent to you upon receiving your form. Information on parking, a schedule of events, and directions to the campus shall be provided to the participants.
