MIS or Computer Science

The difference between MIS and other Computer majors

Here's a brief contrast to help students understand the difference between MIS and other computer related majors. A computer science degree focuses on software systems and programming in great depth. A computer engineering degree focuses on designing and building computer hardware. MIS professionals, on the other hand, require in-depth knowledge of human and organizational issues surrounding computer use such as:

  • Designing computer systems to meet specific human and organizational needs
  • Designing computer systems for maximum usability and human productivity
  • Interpersonal communication using computers
  • Record keeping using computers
  • Conducting and tracking business transactions with computers
  • Supporting teamwork via computers
  • Using computers to improve decisions
  • Managing organizational knowledge

"Information isn't worth much if it doesn't serve a purpose. In a class on managing information systems, you'll learn how businesses use information systems to improve their operations. You will also learn how to manage various information systems so that they best serve the needs of particular industries. And you will even study how information systems can improve the way a business is organized." Copyright © 2008, Inc

MIS graduates are considered Information Technology Professionals and are in high demand by today's businesses. Because of their unique understanding of business, combined with an understanding of today's information technology and how to use it for competitive advantage, MIS majors are especially prized by many organizations.
