Scholarship Funds Available for APN
The Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) Division of Nursing has received a federal Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship (AENT) grant, in the sum of $325,000 to provide Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) student support for tuition, books, and stipends to assist with living expenses. The grant is renewable for another $325,000 for the 2013-2014 school years, for a total of $650,000 in student support funding. The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant is designed to increase the number of Advanced Nurse Practitioners trained to practice as primary care providers.
The WSSU Division of Nursing has also received a HRSA Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students (SDS) grant in the amount of $440,000 to support graduate nursing students. The grant is renewable for four years (2012-2016) by submitting a successful continuation proposal.
The HRSA Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students program provides funds to schools to support full-time, financially needy students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are enrolled in Health Programs. SDS funding covers at least 50 percent of each student’s annual tuition costs. Eligible students must be from a disadvantaged background as defined by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and legal residents of the U.S. Currently about 90 percent of WSSU nursing students fit the definition of "economically disadvantaged".
Students awarded scholarships must participate in monthly retention activities and remain in good academic standing while enrolled in at least 9 credit hours per semester.
