WSSU hosts ‘We Built This’ exhibit that celebrates Black architects, builders in North Carolina through March at library

Preservation North Carolina presents “We Built This: Profiles of Black Architects and Builders in North Carolina.” The exhibit will be held March 1-31 at the C.G. O’Kelly Library on the campus of Winston-Salem State University, 601 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Winston-Salem.

Visitors are invited to explore the rich history and contributions of black architects and builders in North Carolina during the following exhibit hours:

  • Monday-Thursday: 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Friday: 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Saturday: (March 2 and 23): 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Sunday: 12 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Special spring break hours are March 11-15 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those looking to avoid the crowds and enjoy a more leisurely visit are encouraged to attend during those times when the campus will be less crowded, organizers said.

In addition to the exhibition, there will be special events on March 2 and March 23.

  • Panel 1: Churches – St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church and Goler A.M.E. Zion Churches
  • Panel 2: Institutional Buildings – Malloy/Jordan East Winston Heritage Center and the Elva J. Jones Computer Science Facility.
Community Sharing
March 23 from 1-4 p.m.
  • Part 1: Community conversation about the importance of the Black community in Forsyth County
  • Part 2: Opportunity to digitize photos and other printed materials for inclusion in the African American Heritage Initiative Digital Archive.
