WSSU Summer Scholars Program ignites, nurtures passion for STEM in local youth

Winston-Salem State University is shaping the future of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) through its Math Science Education Network (MSEN) Pre-College Program’s Summer Scholars initiative, providing an academic experience for students ranging from third to 12th grades.

The Summer Scholars program is designed to spark curiosity and confidence in STEAM. Participants for this summer’s cohort were a diverse mix of 52 young scholars – mostly middle-schoolers – from the surrounding community who have shown an interest in STEM fields.

“This year’s Summer Scholars program has truly exceeded expectations,” said Joe Baker, MSEN pre-college coordinator, who oversees the initiative. “Our students have embraced STEM challenges, engaged in collaborative learning and demonstrated tremendous growth. Their enthusiasm and innovation reflect the mission of the WSSU MSEN Pre-College Program – to empower the next generation of STEM leaders. It has been a summer of discovery, creativity and transformation.”

The program blends hands-on, project-based learning with culturally responsive workshops and college-readiness experiences. Students collaborate in small groups, tackle real-world problems, and participate in interactive lessons that build both technical skills and academic self-confidence.

While much of the programming takes place in classrooms and labs on the WSSU campus, students are also transported to the university’s Center for Design and Innovation for technology courses.

Baker also announced a new partnership with Foot Locker to launch a Leadership Academy for high school students during the upcoming academic year. The Saturday Leadership Academy is a program designed for rising ninth through 12th grade students, with a focus on leadership development, STEM career pathways and business-centered learning experiences.

The new program aims to enhance college and trade school readiness, support career exploration and deepen WSSU’s and Foot Locker’s commitment to educational equity and economic mobility. Click here to apply.

“WSSU is proud to host programs like this that help level the playing field and empower the next generation of leaders,” Baker said. “We’re not just inviting students onto our campus, we’re investing in their future, their families and the broader community. By creating early access to STEM learning and mentorship, we’re building bridges between the university and the next generation of innovators.”
