Hairston-Brown Legacy Endowed Scholarship surpasses $50,000 inception goal to empower student success

Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) is celebrating a milestone achievement as the Hairston-Brown Legacy Endowed Scholarship has officially exceeded its initial $50,000 fundraising goal, reaching nearly $70,000 in gifts.
The scholarship was established by Chancellor Bonita J. Brown, her husband Wesley Brown and her parents Bern and Freda Hairston, as a lasting tribute to their family’s deep connection to WSSU. The endowment was launched in honor of Chancellor Brown’s official installation and announced during the inauguration gala, the culminating celebration of the installation weekend.
“My heart is full to know that my family legacy will have a place here at Winston-Salem State University,” said Chancellor Bonita J. Brown. “As I always say, this university chose me and my family. Our history is rich here, and this endowment ensures that our support will remain here long after I’m gone.”
More than just a financial resource, endowed scholarships like the Hairston-Brown Legacy Fund play a critical role in bridging financial gaps that can derail a student’s academic journey. For many WSSU students, a few hundred dollars can determine whether they are able to stay enrolled, register for the next semester or complete an internship opportunity that leads to full-time employment.
The Hairston-Brown Legacy Endowed Scholarship provides critical support to help students bridge financial gaps and allows high-achieving scholars to focus fully on their education and future success rather than the burden of financial stress.
A Legacy Rooted in Ram Pride
The Hairston-Brown family’s ties to WSSU run deep. Both of Chancellor Brown’s parents are proud alumni of the university, and in a recent video chronicling their WSSU journey, they reflected on how the institution shaped their futures.
“This university was there when we needed it,” they shared. “It opened doors and fueled our career paths. Now, it’s our turn to give back so that others can have the same opportunity.”
Their story reflects the heart of the Hairston-Brown Legacy Endowment, honoring the past while creating pathways for future generations of Rams.
