The Slater Speakers Series takes its name from the founding name of Winston-Salem State University – Slater Industrial Academy. Slater was established in 1892 by Simon G. Atkins. It was the first Black school in the nation to grant degrees for teaching the elementary grades. This series pays homage to our humble beginnings and our audacious future.

This series is made possible by generous donations from our sponsors. These funds were explicitly designated to bring speakers to Winston-Salem State University. Our goal remains to provide our students with high-impact opportunities that enrich their college journeys.
