Undergraduate Awards

The goal of the Excellence in Undergraduate Writing award is to recognize and reward top undergraduate research/essay composition produced by students, in any major/discipline. Submissions can be based on any faculty-assisted research, scholarship, or creative project. The award is to encourage students to achieve success in integrating the different Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) of Critical Thinking, Written Communication, Critical Reading, Information Literacy, Quantitative Literacy, Scientific Literacy, and becoming global thinkers.

First prize for this competition will be $750, second will be $500, and third will be $250. Honorable Mention awards are $100. All prizes will be provided to students in the form of a gift card. For this competition, any academic writing supervised by a faculty member will be accepted. It is advised that all papers should additionally be viewed by the Writing Center.

Announcement

The Canvas shell will open for submissions on November 9th. . Papers are due by 11:59 p.m. on February 26th, and winners will be announced during WSSU Scholarship Week April 5-9th, 2021. Submission Information/Process

All papers must be 12 point, times new roman font.  They should be single spaced, and 4-6 pages in length.  They should be properly formatted by whatever your academic disciple uses (APA or MLA for example).

All students must work with a faculty member.

Page 1 should only have the title, name, and faculty advisor's name on it.  Page 2 should only have the title of the paper; NO NAMES can appear on these pages.  These pages do NOT count towards your 4-6 pages.
  • Your abstract should not be more than 200 words.
  • You should have between 4-7 key words.
  • Your paper should follow the standard research format: Introduction, Research Questions/Purpose of the Study, Method(ology)—if applicable, Results/Findings, and Discussion/Conclusion.
  • You should demonstrate at least three of the SLOs in the paper.

Graduate Awards

Submissions can be based on any faculty-assisted, unpublished research, scholarship, or creative project. The award is to recognize and encourage excellence in graduate students.
