900.1 - Sexual Orientation Policy
University Group Policy #900.1
I. Policy Statement
Educational and employment decisions should be based on an individual's abilities and qualifications and should not be based on factors or personal characteristics that are not germane to academic abilities or job performance. Traditionally we have viewed race, gender, religion, and national origin as among those factors which are not connected with academic abilities or job performance. An individual's sexual orientation is another factor which is not relevant to educational and employment decisions[1].Only relevant factors are to be considered in such decisions. Equitable and consistent standards of conduct and performance are to be applied at Winston-Salem State University. The University, therefore, will not exercise or tolerate discrimination against any student or employee based upon sexual orientation. This internal policy does not apply to the University's relationships with outside organizations, including the federal government, the military and private employers.
II. Guidelines
Grievance Procedures
Faculty, staff, and students who have a complaint may seek appropriate redress regarding matters related to sexual orientation through the Office of EEO. Should the claimant’s grievance ultimately fail, there is no State supported recourse beyond the campus grievance process.
Statement for Publications
The following short statement regarding the university's inclusive policy on sexual orientation is to be used in university publications whenever such publications contain abbreviated references to other university policies regarding discrimination such as “Winston-Salem State University is an EEO Institution.”
Winston-Salem State University regards all discrimination, including discrimination on the basis of age, color, disability, ethnicity, familial status, national origin, race, religion/sect, sex, sexual orientation, or veteran status to be inconsistent with its goal of providing a welcoming environment in which all students, faculty, and staff may learn and work toward achieving their full potential.
[1] Winston-Salem State University acknowledges and understands that the category of sexual orientation is not a protected category under Federal or State law and therefore cannot be grieved beyond campus level
