Student Computer Requirements and Recommendations

Winston-Salem State University encourages students to have a personal laptop that meets or exceeds the minimum technical specifications listed below. Owning a device that aligns with these standards supports academic success by enabling students to complete assignments efficiently, collaborate with classmates, participate in hands-on learning experiences, and access a variety of digital tools and resources.

Please be aware that some programs or colleges may require additional or more advanced technology. Students should consult their specific program or college website for any supplemental requirements or recommendations.

Recommended Computer Specifications for Personal Windows Computers

  • Intel i5 or i7 processor
  • 8GB (minimum) 16GB Memory (recommended)
  • Windows 11 operating system 
  • 16 GB RAM or more 
  • 256 GB (minimum) 512 GB hard drive (recommended) (solid state recommended)
  • Wi-Fi capable
  • Camera
  • Microphone
  • Speakers / headphone jack

Recommended Computer Specifications for Personal Apple Computers

  • MacOS Sonoma Minimum/MacOS Tahoe Recommended
  • Apple M2 Chip (minimum,) with 8-Core CPU (minimum,) 10-Core GPU (recommended)
  • 8GB unified memory(minimum) 16GB (recommended)
  • 512GB SSD storage
  • Camera
  • Microphone
  • Speakers / headphone jack

 Optional Supplemental Devices

Tablets and Chromebooks can be useful as supplemental devices, but WSSU does not recommend students rely on cell phones, tablets, or Chromebook devices as their primary computer.

Students who do not have access to a laptop may be able to borrow one for a short-term loan period (5-days) from among a limited number of laptops.
