Early College


If you have earned an associate’s degree through the one of the North Carolina Early College and Cooperative Innovative High School Partnerships, you have the opportunity to choose your admission student type. You may choose either New First Time Freshman or Transfer as your student type. 


Below are the requirements for each student type as well as the advantages associated with the student type.

Minimum Course Requirements (MCR)

In addition to meeting the minimum eligibility requirements, students need to have completed some core high school-level coursework. All UNC System universities require the courses listed below and consider how well students perform, including performance in national achievement tests. 

  • Language: Four course units in language, including:
    • four units in English, emphasizing grammar, composition and literature 
  • Mathematics: Four course units of mathematics, in any of the following combinations: 
    • Algebra I and II, Geometry, and one unit beyond Algebra II
    • Algebra 1 and II, and two units beyond Algebra II, or
    • Integrated Math I, II, and III, and one unit beyond Integrated Math III
    • The System strongly encourages future students to take at least one mathematics course unit in the 12th grade.  
  • Sciences: Three course units in Science, including:
    • at least one unit in a life or biological science (for example, Biology)
    • at least one unit in physical sciences (for example, Physical Science, Chemistry, Physics), and 
    • at least one laboratory course
  • Social Studies
    • Two course units in social studies, including one unit in U.S. history.
    • Students who do not have the unit in U.S. history may be admitted on the condition that they pass at least three seester hours in that subject by the end of the sophomore year. 
  • Additional Courses
    • Two additional academic courses from English, mathematics, science, social studies, world languages, or computer science.
    • These courses should be selected in alignment with a student's academic and career objectives. Completion of two sequential world language courses is recommended.
Exempt
Minimum Admissions Requirements (MAR) For students entering in the Fall 2026 semester and beyond:
  • High School GPA: A minimum weighted GPA of 2.5.
  • Standardized Test Scores: Students with a weighted High School GPA greater than or equal to 2.50 and less than 2.80 are required to submit a standardized test score of a 17 or higher on the ACT of a 930 or higher on the SAT.

Please not that, while these are the minimum requirements for consideration, they do not guarantee acceptance.

MCR and MAR Exception Non-Exempt Students who are at least 21 years old or have an earned Associate of Arts or Science are exempt from both MCR and MAR
