WSSU football 2019: Here are 7 things to know

Bowman Gray Stadium is ready for the home opener against Catawba College on Sept. 14.
The Rams open their home football schedule at Bowman Gray Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 14, against Catawba College. Here are seven things to watch for the game.

1. Clear Bag Policy
For the safety of the campus community and the public, and to expedite entry into athletics venues, WSSU has adopted a clear bag policy this season. The policy starts with Saturday's game against Catawba College. Athletics will have clear bags available for purchase prior to the game with locations near each gate.

2. Million Dollar Match
WSSU is kicking off the Million Dollar Match fundraiser on Saturday with student volunteers staffing tables near the press box. The unique fundraiser allows alumni and friends to maximize their gift. Between now and December 31, every dollar donated toward need-based endowed scholarships will be matched dollar-for-dollar.

3. Nation's No. 1 D2 HBCU Band
WSSU’s Red Sea of Sound marching band, for the second consecutive year, is opening the season as the no. 1 HBCU marching band in Division II, according to ESPN's The Undefeated. This was announced on Thursday, Sept. 12.

WSSU's Red Sea of Sound and Wake Forest's Spirit of the Old Gold and Black perform together during halftime of Wake Forest's home opener at BB&T Field on Aug. 30.

4. Rams football returns to WSNC-FM
Last month, WSSU athletics announced that football and basketball are returning to WSNC-FM, WSSU’s on-campus radio station.

5. New Uniforms, New Interim Head Coach
This will be the home debut for the new Under Armour uniforms and for interim head Coach Robert Massey.

Earlier this year, in preparation for the switch to Under Armour, WSSU athletics launched the Team 250 fundraiser. Thanks to alumni and friends, close to $138,000 was raised. Donors included: WSSU alumnus Stephen A. Smith; the Chris Paul Foundation; and WSSU alumnus and NFL star William Hayes.

6. WSSU WeatherSTEM
Live weather updates are available through WSSU WeatherSTEM, the university’s WSSU-branded weather monitoring unit.

7. BDaht is back
A familiar voice will be behind the microphone at Bowman Gray Stadium this year, WSSU alumnus Brian "BDaht" McLaughlin.
