Every year at WSSU, hundreds of students, faculty and staff participate in Intramural Sports. Our program offers a wide range of activities for UREC members, regardless of skill level or time commitment. Whether you were a varsity star, a fifth-string quarterback, or have never participated in a sport, our sports programs are the perfect way to be active and involved. We emphasize fun, while fostering a healthy spirit of competition, sportsmanship, teamwork, and friendship through all of our activities.

Intramural Sports

All students, faculty, staff and UREC members have the opportunity to enjoy any sport that is offered through the Intramural Sports program. These sports not only offer competition, but also provide a great outlet to meet new people and become involved with the WSSU community.

UREC members may register for league play through IMLeagues. Members should use their email log in for access

Sport Clubs

A sport club is defined as a registered student organization which exists to promote and develop interest in a particular sport or physical activity. These interests can be competitive, recreational, or instructional in nature. Clubs may represent the university in intercollegiate competition or conduct intra-club activities such as practice, instruction, social and tournament play. Sport clubs are student initiated and student managed. Involvement in a sport club enhances the students' college experience and contributes to the students' overall education.

Unified Sports

UREC has paired up with Special Olympics Forsyth County and Winston-Salem Recreation and Parks to offer Unified Sports. Unified Sports is an inclusive program which combines individuals with intellectual disabilities (athletes) and individuals without intellectual disabilities (partners) on sports teams for competition. Athletes and partners compete alongside one another, each in a meaningful and integral role on the Unified Sports team. UREC offers flag football, volleyball, dodgeball and basketball.

In sports, winning and losing are mere outcomes. What is part of the game is the pure satisfaction of participation, getting fit and enhancing friendships. Without your opponent, there is no game, no contest, no memories, and no fun. You are indebted to them as they are to you. The spirit of play is then based on cooperation. Upholding high standards of integrity and fair play acknowledges this idea of cooperative competition. All players are encouraged to use their best judgment in caring for the safety of others as well as themselves. The ultimate goal of the players means more than win or lose. All players are asked to participate within the context of this SPIRIT of PLAY.
