WSSU's Trajectory: A Historical Perspective

As we envision Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) in 2030, we reflect on the institution’s achievements and the path established by faculty, staff, students, alumni, and stakeholders in previous strategic plans. Since 1990, the following four strategic visions have collectively and cumulatively impacted the current fabric of WSSU.

The Building of Intellectual Skills | Renewed institutional commitment to liberal arts to develop and hone the problem-solving, critical thinking, writing & speaking skills.

Experiencing Academic Distinction | Evolved commitment from liberal arts to liberal education, implementing “high impact practices” inside and outside the classroom to sharpen the essential skills of its students.

Each of these strategic plans developed a roadmap for WSSU to establish national prominence, which has elevated the institution as a “first choice” university.
